Best Kitchen Design Advice from Emily Henderson

Heather Asiyanbi - Apr 20, 2018 9:00:00 AM

Emily Henderson knows design. Not only was she the winner of HGTV's "Design Star," she hosted her own television show, is a best-selling author** and also runs Emily Henderson Design, a successful design firm in Los Angeles.

Taking on a kitchen remodel - or even just refreshing your kitchen - can be overwhelming, so we asked Henderson a few questions to help put you on the right track to loving your space:

What trends in kitchen design do you see having staying power (and moving from trend to staple)?

A lot of trends from the 90's are back in full force. They definitely have seen a bit of an update, but some of the classics are back for good. Glass-front cabinetry, metallics, light wood kitchens, and open shelving are all making a good comeback. If you are a little scared to make the jump, a safe bet is an all-white kitchen, as those are always a winner in my book.

What’s hot right now for kitchens that you might advise homeowners to reconsider?

A few beautiful brass accents can go a long way and using brass in small doses will keep its longevity. Just as in life, sometimes less is more.

How do you blend the tastes/styles of couples who are on opposite ends of the design spectrum?

It is all about finding balance through foundation pieces in your kitchen. Keep your cabinets neutral and in a color/stain that both parties like, then introduce elements from each through smaller accessories, items, dinnerware, etc. that will not overpower the other style too much.

Do you have a one thing that you feel every kitchen should include?

Storage. Open shelving is very big right now, but it is not practical for everyone. Make sure it works for your lifestyle or you will be pulling your hair out trying to keep your sippie cups looking pretty on that open shelf. Lighting is also another thing you can never have enough of in a kitchen. Recessed lighting as well as pretty pendant and accent lighting will go a long way in making your kitchen warm and inviting.

Will white-on-white kitchens ever go out of style?

No, I don't think so. White will always work and it is great to mix with any style of home.

What do you love most about design?

The power that it has to really transform how someone lives. You would be surprised how much cleaning up a space, redecorating the bedroom, or a simple kitchen remodel can completely change your mood.

**Henderson's book, Styled, is a New York Times bestseller.
